One of the reasons we came to Normandy was to see all of the World War II memorials. What we did not expect was how MANY of them there were. Lucky Dragon and Koala Bear both learned about World War II while we were in the United States this last year.
Lucky Dragon read a book in Honors English about D-Day. There were a few times that we read it together as a family. Being able to walk along those beaches was a special experience.
For our Muggles, any time we are on a beach is AMAZING. It was cold and windy, but we loved every toe freezing moment of it!
Someone put out some white roses along the beach to honor the fallen people who sacrificed for freedom.
There were several monuments along all the beaches honoring all the Allied Forces who landed on the beach that day.
Going to places like this make the lessons we learn in history books real and tangible. We saw the steel stars the Germans put up, the boats that the allied forces used and were there for low tide so we could see how far they had to run while being shot at before they had cover.
Two benches set to look over Omaha beach and reflect on those who fought for what they believed in.
I loved this tribute-- In tribute to those whose bravery has enabled to separate light from darkness.
It was a solemn place to be. One that inspired thankfulness and the desire to be better.
