Celebrating U.S. Independence Day in India

One of the amazing parts of serving our country abroad is celebrating Independence Day. There is so much pride in who we serve and the people and state we represent. This year we celebrated in India. It was a great combination of familiar and traditional mixed with new and changing.

We had fun, hot dogs, fried chicken, and hamburgers with American friends. The kids were able to have their faces painted and do crafts. We played traditional games like musical chairs--which for a bunch of 3-culture children that have not grown up in the United States, they were so confused. But by the time the adults played they were cheering on their parents!

The rest of the weekend we tried to get out and have as much fun as we could. The two Muggles went to art class and made birdhouses.

Koala Bear's slipper broke as we were walking, so I carried her until we came to a street market where we could buy some replacements~! Luckily it broke in the good spot.

We played games with friends and watched the rains come down and the floods rise up---sounds like a familiar children's song. The rains came and came. For the most part it has not disrupted our life. There have been a few nights we did not make it out in fear we would not make it back.

Lucky Dragon renamed the roads near our house "Water Way," "Drought-less Drive" and "Lake Lane." We even spent a wonderful day playing pickleball in the rain. We were drenched, but we were happy.

I took the kids to one of the animal shelters in Mumbai. It was inspirational and sad all at the same time. It was great to see how they help animals that have serious illnesses and accidents and bring them to health. But so sad to see that some of them have suffered so much. We loved visiting all of the rooms with animals. We laughed and talked to them. Most of them just wanted attention. There was a set of brother puppies that were extremely happy to see our Muggles. One had lost a leg and another had a club foot. But they were wagging their tails with joy to see children. One did not want Koala Bear to go and he kept sticking his nose and one front leg out of the fence to reach her,
