A Big Glittering Rock For A Mother's Day Gift

We gave Lady Hiva a big glittering rock for Mother's Day. The caveate? It was not on a shining gold ring, she had to dig it out herself!

I wrote a blog several years ago about knowing I was a Dad on Father's Day when i was happy to wear a "Trolls" tie that Lucky Dragon gave me. This weekend reminded me of that experience. Lady Hiva knows she is a true mum now because for Mother's Day she was willing to go dig out geodes in the middle of the no-where desert because that is what her children would like to do.

We decided to drive out west of Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain on dirt roads into nothingness to the Dougway Geode beds. It was a LONG drive. We saw plenty of dirt and grime as we went. But we also were able to see some wild horses. It was odd that they would just stand there as people walked up to them. The wild horses west of Beaver would NOT allow that to happen!

We dug in the dirt, dust and desert sun for a few hours. It was fun to dig out a rock that we thought could be a geode and pile them up. Who knew that family time would mean we would eat dirt, be covered in dust and have to find ways/places to use the bathroom along the way. Luckily, it was so dusty we could see people coming from miles off and could be done using the bathroom before they got closer!

Koala Bear hunts rocks like I fish...it is really interesting for the first little while, then it is more fun to just build sand castles (or jump in and swim in my case) while you wait for everyone else. ...Maybe this is telling me I have the attention span and patience of a 3 year old! HAHA

As we were driving the clouds decided to put on a dramatic display

We followed the Pony Express trail across the desert. There were stations set up along the route to help refresh the horses and give the rider a rest. I could not help but imagine how hot it must have been for those riders. It was a long drive in a car with air conditioning...what would it have been like on a horse?!

Each station is now marked with a large tower and plaque. Simpson Springs still has a foundation of one old hose and a refurbished version of another.

The photos below are the results of allowing the two little Muggles to have the phone.

Lucky Dragon loved this trip because it combined some of his favorite things: Digging in the dirt, finding rocks, and using a hammer to smash things. We came home and he spent the next several hours outside just smashing them up to see which glittered inside.

For Mother's Day Dinner I tried to make some of Lady Hiva's favorites: Corn on the cob, BBQ Ribs, roasted potatoes and hand-dipped chocolate covered strawberries.

Her nieces and nephews brought her some Manapua too!
Lucky Dragon planned for a few days on what he wanted to do. Somehow he decided that he was going to make an "experience" for Lady Hiva in his tent. He brought it up from the basement all by himself. He then made a journey of art and words around the inside of the tent for her to come and see. As always, Koala Bear was willing to participate and add to the experience/

Our congregation brought by some treats and a note for Lady Hiva too!

Lucky Dragon wanted to get his mum some flowers. His "go-to" seems to be roses. Usually he chooses red roses, but this time he chose another color scheme!

I was excited when I found Peonies! Another of Lady Hiva's favorite flowers! They are blooming so beautifully!

Every week during Coronavirus, Lucky Dragon's French teachers put on a recipe. He and Lady Hiva have loved making it together. This week was Tarte aux Pomme (apple tart).

Lucky Dragon came downstairs and saw that I had dinner all set up. He asked me, "who is coming over to dinner?" I had to laugh that he saw the nice plates put and assumed we had visitors as that is when we usually have them out.
